Traditional White Beech Wooden Hard Spiles

Our premium wooden hard spiles are made in the UK from high-quality white beech hardwood. Designed to seal casks after venting, they help retain carbonation and keep your ale fresh and in good condition until it is ready to serve.

Used after soft spiles, or on their own depending on the conditioning process, these solid wooden pegs help prevent unnecessary CO₂ loss while maintaining the desired condition of the beer.

Why Choose Our White Beech Hard Spiles?

  • UK-made white beech hardwood – produced from responsibly sourced FSC-certified timber.
  • Traditional, solid hardwood construction – ideal for use in cask ale conditioning.
  • Neutral in use – white beech is traditionally used for hard spiles and is not intended to impart flavour to the ale.
  • Precision fit – approximately 50mm long × 12mm diameter, tapering to 8mm, for a secure fit in suitable standard wooden and plastic cask shives.
  • Natural and untreated – supplied without lacquer, coating or other applied finish.

How They Work

Hard spiles are an essential part of traditional cask ale cellar management. After venting with a soft spile, a hard spile is inserted into the cask shive to help retain the desired level of carbonation and preserve the beer’s flavour, mouthfeel and condition.

Their solid wooden construction provides a firm fit when correctly matched to the cask shive, helping to reduce unwanted gas loss during storage and service.

Whether for professional cellar use or a home cask setup, our UK-made white beech hard spiles offer a reliable, traditional and practical way to help keep your ale in excellent condition.
